To support learners who have 25% extra time in the Component 1: Understanding music exam, an alternative version of the Section A listening file will be available on Centre Services. The extra time listening file, titled ‘8271-W GCSE Music Listening Files 25% Extra Time’, includes the additional 25% extra time built into the recording.

Using this extended listening file is optional and the standard listening file can still be used for learners entitled to extra time.

Further guidance can be found in the GCSE Music Component 1 Understanding music - Teachers’ Notes 2026 (Appendix 1- page 4), which was released on Centre Services on 1 April 2026.

Log in or register for myAQA to get started on Centre Services. When you register, your exams officer will need to review your registration, then you’re ready to go.

GCSE Music - extra time

Schools and colleges will need to submit an application for extra time using the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) Access Arrangements Online before the learner’s first exam.

Once the approval has been agreed, it is at the school or college’s discretion how the extra time is divided dependent on the individual learner’s requirements.

The extra time can be used in the way that is best for the learner and the time can be allocated at any time throughout the GCSE Music exam, for example, applied across both Section A and B or solely to Section A or B.
