Standards

Our aim is to ensure fairness for all students – it’s at the core of everything we do.

Our researchers play a crucial role in the awarding of grades; working together to provide statistical evidence and data to support expert judgements, offering technical advice to external organisations (such as Ofqual), testing and trialling new approaches to maintaining standards and liaising with other exam boards to ensure a joined-up approach.

Our research

Some of the key contributions in this research area have included:

• setting grade standards for the revised GCSE (9-1) grading scale, ensuring comparability with past and present systems
• leading a project on how examination standards are set in national, school-leaving or university entrance examinations
• looking at how statistical standards compare across different subjects and how different education systems and examinations operate.
