Modelling cognitive behaviour with data analysis

Level: Level Two

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. design a simple experiment to collect data on a cognitive task, eg measuring how quickly a person chooses between two, four or eight options

Student completed work

2. construct a scatter plot to visualise the relationship between a psychological variable, eg number of choices, and a behavioural variable, eg reaction time

Student completed work

3. identify and label the independent variable and the dependent variable on the x and y axes of their graph

Student completed work

4. draw a line of best fit, ie a regression line, on their scatter plot that visually represents the trend in the data

Student completed work

5. interpret the meaning of the slope (m) in the context of the experiment, eg m represents the increase in reaction time for each extra choice the brain has to process

Student completed work

6. use their graph to predict the reaction time for a new level of difficulty not tested in the original experiment.
