Coastal environments: Practical mathematics

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. identify and describe at least two 2D and two 3D shapes found in coastal environments, eg the circular nature of a rock pool, the cylindrical shape of a lighthouse, the triangular sails on a boat

2. measure the width and the height of at least two objects using non-standard units, eg pacing, hands

3. measure the width and height of at least two objects using standard units, eg metres, centimetres

4. create a simple tally chart and pictogram to record the different types of seashells, creatures in rock pools and/or beach litter found during a coastal walk

5. compare and order the weights of at least three different objects, eg toys, coastal rocks, using a simple balance scale and key terms such as 'heavier than' and 'lighter than'.
