Decoding the Mona Lisa

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. investigate the identity of the sitter, ie Lisa Gherardini, and give their own opinion regarding the theories regarding her expression in the painting

2. define and identify sfumato, ie the smoky transition of tones, and explain how Da Vinci used it to create depth and realism without harsh outlines in the Mona Lisa

3. produce their own tonal study of any part of the Mona Lisa, specifically attempting to replicate the sfumato effect through soft blending
