Art: The geometry of humanity and the 'vitruvian' man

Level: Entry Level

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. describe lines of symmetry within the Vitruvian Man and at least two other biological forms, distinguishing between perfect and near symmetry

Summary sheet and/or student completed work

2. determine the order of rotational symmetry in geometric shapes used by Da Vinci, eg the circle and the square, and explore why the human figure lacks it

Summary sheet and/or student completed work

3. use the Vitruvian formula, ie height equals arm span, to collect data, plotting their own measurements to test if they fit Leonardo’s square

Summary sheet and/or student completed work

4. accurately construct a Vitruvian Frame, ie a square inscribed within a circle, using a compass and protractor to ensure geometric precision

Summary sheet

5. calculate the ratio of specific body parts, eg total height divided by navel height, to see how close they come to the golden ratio approximately 1.618.

Summary sheet and/or student completed work
