Justin Coombs

Justin heads AQA’s Assessment Technology function, and is responsible for the design and development of the software systems used to deliver assessment, including the administration of candidate entries and results, and the scanning and marking of scripts. This remit expanded to include the authoring of examination content with the acquisition of GradeMaker in April 2023.

Justin joined AQA in 2015 as Head of Software Development, and has been the technical lead on major transformation programmes including the development of systems required to deliver alternative awarding arrangements during the Covid-19 lockdowns.

Justin has wide-ranging experience in software design and delivery with previous positions including Director of Systems Implementation at Dunnhumby, where he led the international rollout of their core data science platform through a significant phase of expansion. He’s also experienced in delivering strategic software solutions in other highly regulated industries, including financial services and medical technology.
